Michael Carrick 'to avoid lengthy layoff as injury not as bad as first feared'

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick could reportedly return to action in December, despite fears of a lengthy layoff after twisting his ankle on England duty.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick could be playing again in December as his ankle injury is reportedly not as bad as first feared.

The 34-year-old was stretchered off during England's 2-0 defeat to Spain in an international friendly in Alicante on Friday.

After the match, manager Roy Hodgson claimed that that the injury did not "look good", sparking fears that Carrick suffered ligament damage when he twisted his ankle.

However, according to The Telegraph, while United are yet to determine the full extent of the injury, the club are confident that their player will not face a lengthy spell on the treatment table.

It is believed that Carrick could be back in action by the end of the month or in early December, but he will miss this weekend's Premier League match against Watford, as well as next Wednesday's Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford.
