On this day: Liverpool win League Cup at Manchester United's expense

Thirty-one years ago today, Liverpool win the League Cup courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Wembley.

Bob Paisley is one of the most successful managers that English football has ever seen.

The Scot guided Liverpool to numerous honours before his retirement in 1983, including six league titles and three European Cups.

He also won three League Cups, the last of which he lifted 31 years ago today as the Reds took on Manchester United at Wembley. Paisley had previous with United in Cup finals, having missed out on the FA Cup in 1977 as United recovered from a one-goal deficit to win 2-1.

It appeared that he would be frustrated by United again six years later when teenager Norman Whiteside broke the deadlock in the 12th minute. The Northern Ireland international turned Alan Hansen sharply, before holding off the Liverpool centre-back to fire a low shot beyond the reach of Bruce Grobbelaar.

It seemed as though Whiteside's early strike was going to be a winning one until Liverpool left-back Alan Kennedy sent the match into extra time with a goal scored in the 75th minute. The former Newcastle United defender hit a shot from 20 yards out, which bounced in front of Gary Bailey, deceiving the United goalkeeper on its way into the net.

That goal sparked belief into the Merseysiders, who won the match in the 98th minute thanks to Ronnie Whelan's curling effort from the edge of the United penalty area, which secured the trophy for Liverpool for the third successive year.
