Nemanja Vidic's agent claims that the Manchester United captain could be back "in five or six months" following a serious knee injury.

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic could make a return to action earlier than expected following a serious knee injury, according to his agent.

The Serbian defender was ruled out for up to a year after he damaged cruciate, lateral and medial ligaments in his right knee against Basle at the beginning of December.

However, Silvano Martina has claimed that the 30-year-old could be back at the end of the season.

"Nemanja is feeling good and waiting to start his rehabilitation. The first forecasts said the injury could last for a year, but I believe he will be ready to go back in five or six months," he said.

"Vidic will be back next year, stronger and better. He tore ligaments, which is a serious injury, but thanks to medical progress, it is similar to suffering a meniscus problem 20 years ago.

"The club doctors assure us that the recovery will run smoothly and that he will be back very quickly."

United are currently second in the Premier League table on goal difference behind Manchester City.
