Craig Pawson to referee Community Shield

The FA confirms that Craig Pawson will referee the Community Shield match between Premier League champions Leicester City and FA Cup winners Manchester United.

Craig Pawson has been confirmed as the referee for the Community Shield match between Leicester City and Manchester United.

The annual curtain-raiser of the new season will take place at Wembley on August 7, with new Premier League champions Leicester taking on FA Cup winners Man Utd.

It will be Jose Mourinho's first match in charge of United in the 2016-17 English football calendar having replaced Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford during the summer.

"I refereed Leicester City versus Manchester United last season, which was a 1-1 draw at Leicester and it was a really good game," Pawson told the FA's official website.

"Leicester had such a great season and went on to be champions, so it makes for a very exciting game against a Manchester United side with their new manager and new signings.

"So, fingers crossed, it will be a really good start to the season for us and I'm obviously really excited to be back at Wembley again. It's the curtain-raiser to the new season and it's a game that everybody watches."

Pawson has previously taken charge of three games at Wembley, most recently the FA Cup semi-final between Crystal Palace and Watford in April.
