Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson insists that his loan spell at Sheffield United can be a springboard for a future England call-up.

Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has insisted that his loan spell at Sheffield United can be a springboard for a future England call-up.

The 21-year-old, whose temporary move to the Championship was announced in June, has appeared once at Under-21 level for the Three Lions.

Speaking to The Mirror, Henderson referenced Manchester City stopper Angus Gunn's senior call-up during his loan spell at Norwich City, adding that there is "no reason why" Gunn's actions can not be replicated.

"This will help me massively to go forward, play on a bigger stage in front of bigger crowds, build my profile and hopefully have a chance to get my first senior call," Henderson said. "Angus Gunn got a call-up from the Championship last season. I'll have to prove it but don't see why I can't.

"[England's World Cup run] fills me with so much confidence and makes me think the [goalkeeper] position is possible for me. I'm not silly and know he's got games behind him and a good World Cup.

"But in four years there's no reason why I can't challenge for the England No.1 shirt for the next 10 to 15 years with the ability and confidence I have. This is the first time I've probably let it out but I've no problem with that because I believe I'm going to go and back it up."

Henderson signed a new two-year deal with Man United in June before leaving for South Yorkshire.
