Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been hit with a charge from the Football Association over his comments about referee Anthony Taylor ahead of the Premier League clash with Liverpool earlier this month.

In the build-up to the fixture, which finished goalless, Mourinho claimed that it would be 'difficult' for Manchester-based referee Taylor to officiate the fixture due to the "pressure on him".

It had been thought that the Portuguese's comments would go unpunished, but the FA has charged the 53-year-old with 'bringing the game into disrepute'.

"Jose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct in respect of comments he made relating to the appointed match referee, prior to the Liverpool v Manchester United fixture on Monday 17 October," read the FA's statement. "It is alleged his comments were improper and/or brought the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3(1)."

Mourinho has until October 31 at 6pm to respond to the charge.
