Rio Ferdinand believes that injuries have stopped him reaching 500 appearances for Manchester United as he gets ready to play his 400th game for the club.

Rio Ferdinand has claimed that injuries have stopped him reaching 500 appearances for Manchester United as he gets ready to play his 400th game for the club.

The 33-year-old, who joined the Red Devils from Leeds United in 2002, has been plagued by leg and back injuries during the last two seasons.

"I'm proud of playing 400 times for this great club although part of me thinks it could have been 500 if I hadn't had those injuries over the last couple of seasons," he told The Sun.

"That's another good reason for keeping going to make up for lost time. I feel good now. I'm over the injuries and enjoying my football as much as ever.

"However long the manager wants me here, and my body can take it, I want to stay at this club."

Ferdinand became the most expensive defender in world football when he completed his £30m move to United 10 years ago.
