Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Rio Ferdinand will be ruled out of Manchester United's Boxing Day clash against Wigan Athletic.
The former England captain was excluded from the Red Devils team that defeated Fulham 5-0 at Craven Cottage last night due to a foot injury.
"Rio got a knock on the foot against QPR," said Ferguson. "I think he will be available for Blackburn, not Wigan."
The Premier League champions have suffered additional injury woes as winger Ashley Young could be sidelined for up to three weeks, while Phil Jones awaits results from a scan following a head clash with Fulham's Clint Dempsey.
