Sir Alex Ferguson calls for Michael Carrick to step up and play a pivotal role in United's title challenge.

Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Michael Carrick to play a key role in Manchester United's title challenge.

The 30-year-old has been in and out of the Red Devils side this year but starred in their 2-0 victory over QPR last Sunday.

United's midfield has been weakened this year with injuries to Anderson and Tom Cleverly while Darren Fletcher has taken a break from the game due to illness.

Reports have linked the Old Trafford club with a move for Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder, but Ferguson has backed Carrick to shine in United's charge for Premier League glory.

"I think it is time Michael became the pivotal player of our team," said Ferguson.

"Now is the time for him to start a long period of dominating the centre of midfield like he has in the last few weeks.

"He has been instrumental in what is happening to the team at the moment."

Carrick joined United from Tottenham in 2006 for a fee of £18m and has gone on to make over 250 appearances under Ferguson at Old Trafford.
