Club legend Ryan Giggs says that Marcus Rashford was to blame for the confusion surrounding Manchester United's penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Ryan Giggs has insisted that Marcus Rashford was to blame after Manchester United missed a penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night.

With the scoreline at 1-1, Paul Pogba saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Rui Patricio having taken over responsibility from Rashford, who had scored a penalty against Chelsea nine days ago.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that the decision over who takes a spot kick is left up to the two players, something which has been widely criticised since the full-time whistle.

However, Giggs has claimed that it was up to Rashford to demand the ball once Pogba had been felled by Conor Coady inside the area.

The former winger told Optus Sport: "Rashford is a centre-forward, scores a goal in his first league game, penalty, you get another penalty in the next game, you've got to be demanding to take it.

"Pogba has not got a great record either of scoring penalties. He doesn't score every penalty he takes. It seems like whoever wins the penalty gets to take it, I wonder if [Harry] Maguire or [Victor] Lindelof win the penalty, who gets to take it?

"I was surprised. I'm not surprised that Paul Pogba stepped up, because he's that kind of player, which is obviously encouraging. I'm just surprised when you've scored a penalty the game before, that you get a penalty the next game you don't take it.

"So you open up to criticism then, because if Marcus misses it then OK, you can miss a penalty, but now everybody is talking about why Marcus didn't take it, why did Pogba take it?"

Pogba's miss meant that United failed to their chance to move to the top of the Premier League table.
