Hearts have signed Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira on a season-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old joined United in 2012 and has made three first-team appearances.

The former Portugal Under-21 international has also had loan spells with Rochdale, Portuguese clubs Belenenses and Vitoria Setubal plus Belgian side Kortrijk.

The 6ft 2in goalkeeper will compete with Zdenek Zlamal and Colin Doyle for a starting place at Tynecastle.

Both goalkeepers had spells as number one last season, with Zlamal playing all six competitive matches so far this term.

Pereira is looking forward to the healthy rivalry for a place in Craig Levein's team.

He told Hearts TV: "I spoke with the staff at Manchester United and the idea was for me to get out there on loan and get as many minutes as I can. Hopefully it will be good here and I will fight to get as many minutes as I can here.

"Wherever I've been, the GK union – as we call it – has been great and special and I hope that will be the same here. I'm sure it will and I'm looking forward to making that great team spirit and great GK union.

"It's obviously always good to have competition as long as there is respect between all of us while we are team-mates and we will all be fighting for the same spot. Then the decision is with the manager."
