USA chiefs are waiting for Manchester United to sack Jose Mourinho before offering the Portuguese the chance to manage their national side, according to a report.

The United States national side are reportedly standing by to offer Jose Mourinho a job should he be sacked by Manchester United.

Mourinho has endured a nightmare third season at Old Trafford, as his side have gone four matches without a victory and have won just four of their 10 matches overall.

Having seen his future called into question over the past fortnight, Sports Illustrated suggests that USA are on the brink of making the Portuguese a job offer.

The report claims that Mourinho will be tasked with reviving the nation's fortunes following their failure to reach this year's World Cup, leading to the exit of coach Bruce Arena.

USA have held off from offering the post to any other managers as they are allegedly waiting until Mourinho officially becomes available.
