Manchester United have confirmed that Chris Smalling sustained a groin injury during their 1-1 draw with Sunderland in the Premier League earlier today.
The defender seemed to pick up a knock in the build-up to Juan Mata's 16th-minute goal before being substituted shortly before half time.
Manager Louis van Gaal told the club's website: "Of course, we have a lot of injuries right now. We had seven and now Smalling is already injured again so it is eight.
"You need all of your players. It is a groin injury, but we will have to wait and see how long. It is too early at the moment."
Smalling joins Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera among those sidelined at the club.
