Phil Neville: 'Ryan Giggs will be a brilliant manager'

Former Man United player Phil Neville believes that Ryan Giggs will be a "brilliant manager" in the future amid speculation that he could take over at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United player Phil Neville has backed Ryan Giggs to become a "brilliant manager" in the future.

Giggs has been linked with taking over at Old Trafford until the end of the season as speculation continues to grow that time is running out for incumbent boss Louis van Gaal at the club.

Van Gaal's lack of presence on the touchline was among the criticisms of the Dutchman following Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Norwich City, but Neville, currently assistant manager at Valencia, believes that Giggs has a good mentor in the former Netherlands boss.

"I'm an assistant manager and if I'm losing at home then I go into the technical area and try and change things, that's what Ryan Giggs was doing on Saturday," Neville told BBC Sport.

"He was trying to get a reaction from the crowd. Ryan is working for a great manager and learning lots. He will be a brilliant manager in the years to come."

Reports have suggested that the United board have given Van Gaal two games to save his job, starting with a Boxing Day trip to take on Stoke City.
