Jamie Vardy breaks record as Leicester, Manchester United draw

Leicester City draw 1-1 with Manchester United as Jamie Vardy scores in his 11th consecutive Premier League match.

Leicester City have drawn 1-1 with Manchester United, in a match where Jamie Vardy broke the Premier League record by scoring in his 11th consecutive match.

United controlled possession throughout the first half, but were unable to create many clear opportunities - captain Wayne Rooney fired a tame effort at Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel, before Chris Smalling struggled to get a strong headed connection at a corner.

The Foxes took the lead on 24 minutes from a counter attack following a United corner. Fuchs released Vardy in the United penalty area, who fired a low shot beyond the reach of David de Gea to break Ruud van Nistelrooy's record.

With the home crowd buoyed by Vardy's goalscoring record, it was Claudio Ranieri's men who looked the most likely to add to the scoreline, as Riyad Mahrez was denied by De Gea.

The visitors equalised on the stroke of half time, as a Juan Mata corner found Bastian Schweinsteiger, who headed past Schmeichel.

The match opened up in the second half as both sides missed opportunities to take the lead - Marc Albrighton asked too much of an unmarked Vardy with a high cross, while Schmeichel denied Schweinsteiger from an Ashley Young free kick.

With the scores still level Leicester's confidence grew, and the Foxes almost regained the lead after the hour mark when Mahrez set up Leonardo Ulloa, but the striker's effort was comfortable for De Gea.

Ulloa had another chance to win the game for Leicester in the 73rd minute but shanked his shot well wide of the target from long range.

It was an open end to the match, and Memphis had a chance in the final five minutes but could only shoot over the crossbar from inside the penalty area.

Matteo Darmian nearly became the unlikely hero for United in stoppage time, but his shot went over the bar.
