Aitor Karanka: 'Playoff place would still be a success'

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka is adamant that his side's season would not be deemed a failure if they miss out on automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has insisted that his side's season will still be a success even if they miss out on automatic promotion to the Premier League.

The North East side are currently fourth in the Championship, one point adrift of Norwich City in second place in the table.

Karanka's men face a critical week in their battle to earn one of the top two spots in the division as they face off against Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Canaries.

He told reporters: "It was always going to go down to the very end. With four games to go the teams are the top are within two points of each other. Wolves is a massive game because we're playing at home and it's important to keep going to get the win.

"I've enjoyed the whole season because the team was worked really well together. Every single game is difficult and if we could win promotion automatically it would be an amazing season.

"If we finish in the playoff spots it would be a good season as well because in the past six seasons in the division our best finish was seventh with 70 points so this season has been the best."

Middlesbrough face Wolves at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday night.
