Stjarnan pip Motherwell in extra time

Motherwell bow out of Europa League qualifying following an extra-time defeat by Stjarnan in Iceland.

Motherwell have been eliminated from Europa League qualifying after Stjarnan struck an extra-time winner to seal a 3-2 victory and move into the third preliminary round.

The Scottish outfit travelled to Iceland as underdogs to move into the next round of the tournament, with Stjarnan boasting two away goals from last week's 2-2 draw.

However, Stuart McCall's side went ahead in the tie on 11 minutes through Steven Hammell, who headed past goalkeeper Ingvar Jonsson.

They failed to make it to the half-time break with the advantage, though, as Olafur Finsen - who bagged a brace in last week's draw at Fir Park - picked up where he left off by converting a penalty to give the hosts the upper hand.

The pendulum swung the way of the Scots once again on 66 minutes, as Gareth Ainsworth volleyed home a Josh Law cross from close range.

McCall's troops were some five minutes away from the next round before heartbreak occurred, as Rolf Toft sent the encounter into extra time by levelling up the aggregate score at four goals apiece.

Motherwell looked to be running out of steam throughout the additional 30-minute period, and Atli Johannsson struck a 114th-minute winner to end the Scot's European odyssey for at least another year.
