Newcastle United restores original stadium name

Newcastle United's stadium will be known as St James' Park once again.

Newcastle United's stadium has reverted back to its original name of St James' Park.

The Magpies' shirt sponsor Wonga has dropped the Sports Direct Arena title in favour of the ground's traditional name.

The club today announced the return of the old St James' Park signage after the Sports Direct banner was removed earlier in the week.

"It's a very emotive day for our fans, that's what they want," Newcastle boss Alan Pardew told Sky Sports News.

"This is what they've always called it. I was upset we changed the name, but it wasn't a decision I was party to.

"But it's nice to see the gesture from Wonga to give it back to the fans, and here we are back at St James' Park, and in good time for the derby."

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley sanctioned the rebranding of the ground last year in a move that angered scores of supporters.
