Alan Shearer lays into Joey Barton's "stupid" dismissal

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer describes Joey Barton's behaviour in getting sent off for punching Tom Huddlestone in QPR's 2-1 defeat at Hull as "stupid".

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has blasted Joey Barton for his "stupid" actions in Queens Park Rangers's 2-1 defeat away at Hull City on Saturday.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who played for the Magpies between 2007 and 2011, was sent off in the 33rd minute of the Premier League game at the KC Stadium for punching Tom Huddlestone in the midriff.

Shearer told BBC Sport: "Joey Barton's red card was a very costly moment. I totally understand that he has gone in to protect his young teammate but pushing Alex Bruce away is stupid.

"And what he did [making contact with Tom Huddlestone] has cost his teammates - and not just today but he has cost them for the next three games as well."

Barton previously criticised Shearer on social media in 2012.
