Steven Taylor targets Olympics

Steven Taylor is eager to make a comeback from injury in time for the Olympics.

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor is hopeful that he will be fit for this summer's London Olympics, after revealing that Stuart Pearce wants the centre-back in his Great Britain football squad.

The 25-year-old, who is out for the rest of the season with an Achilles injury, has admitted that getting called up for the Olympic 2012 team would be an "honour".

"I don't think I'll play again this season," Taylor told talkSPORT. "My main thing now is I want to try to get back training April time because I got a letter from Stuart Pearce the other day with regards to being in the Great Britain squad.

"There's a lot of players who have been asked about it so I want to give myself the best chance and, if I can get fit, hopefully I will be up for selection in July. That's what my main target is. It's important to have a target. I've spoken to the club doctor about it and I need that goal.

"There's no greater honour than representing your country and Great Britain. For me, it would be the biggest achievement and a massive honour for me. I want to be there."

Meanwhile, Newcastle are four points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table following a 3-0 victory over Manchester United last night.
