Newcastle United, West Ham United play out draw at St James' Park

Newcastle United and West Ham United share the spoils in their Premier League clash at St James' Park as neither side can find a breakthrough.

Newcastle United and West Ham United played out a goalless draw in their Premier League clash at St James' Park.

The Magpies almost took the lead in the 13th minute when Winston Reid played the ball back to Jussi Jaaskelainen when he wasn't expecting the ball, but fortunately for the Hammers the pass rolled wide of the post.

Newcastle started to get a foot in the game and were within inches of taking the lead when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa rose highest in the penalty area to head Sylvain Marveaux's corner, but his glancing effort went just wide.

Minutes later, Moussa Sissoko missed a glorious chance as he latched on to Marveaux's ball into the box, but he could only lift his side-footed shot over the bar.

After half time, West Ham spurned a great chance when Stewart Downing raided down the left and whipped a dangerous ball into the box, which was met by Kevin Nolan but he could only head over the bar.

Newcastle could have won the game in injury time when Sammy Ameobi picked up the ball on the left and curled a cross to the back post; it missed everyone in the area and clattered off the post with Jaaskelainen beaten, but no Magpies player could turn the rebound into the net.
