Chancel Mbemba is also handed his first start by Steve McClaren, who takes charge of the Magpies for the first time.

Saints are without Ryan Bertrand, Florin Gardos, Gaston Ramirez and Fraser Forster. Shane Long has recovered from illness to make the bench, but Jordy Clasie joins the lengthening list of injuries.
