Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara reportedly rejected the chance to join Newcastle United on deadline day, despite the two clubs agreeing terms.

Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara reportedly rejected the chance to join Newcastle United on deadline day.

The Magpies were in the market for a late addition to their midfield ranks, and were understood to have agreed terms with Marseille over a deal for the France Under-21s international.

French radio station RMC reports that Newcastle were set to pay a £2.2m loan fee, with the option to make the move permanent next summer for £12.9m.

However, Kamara scuppered the deal at the 11th hour by turning down a move to St James' Park in favour of remaining at Marseille.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were also interested in the 21-year-old on deadline day after missing out on Renato Sanches, but a deal failed to materialise.

Kamara will now stay at the Stade Velodrome until at least January, although his future remains uncertain with his contract due to expire next summer.

The versatile defensive midfielder, who can also play at centre-back, joined Marseille at the age of five and has gone on to make 121 appearances for the senior side.
