Newcastle United will reportedly attempt to sign Matteo Destro from Bologna at the end of the season, although they could face competition from Watford.

Bologna striker Matteo Destro is a summer transfer target for Rafael Benitez at Newcastle United, according to a report.

The 26-year-old, who has five goals in 20 games to his name this term, is also understood to have attracted interest from Premier League rivals Watford.

Italian outlet Il Resto del Carino suggests that Benitez is particularly keen on Destro, having got to know the former Roma, AC Milan and Genoa ace during his time managing in Serie A.

Destro, dropped against Inter Milan recently due to concerns over his attitude, is said to be nearing the end of his time in Italian football.

Benitez has also been tipped to turn Islam Slimani's loan move from Leicester City into a permanent deal at the end of the season should the Algerian impress.
