FIFA executive Domenico Scala resigns in reforms protest

FIFA's head of auditing and compliance Domenico Scala resigns in protest at reforms imposed on the governing body.

FIFA's head of auditing and compliance Domenico Scala has resigned from his post in protest at reforms imposed on the governing body.

The executive is angry that the newly-formed FIFA council will have the power to hire and fire those in charge of the organisation's committees, including auditing, ethics and finance.

Scala claims that FIFA's committees have been "deprived of their independence".

The FIFA council was created as a replacement for the organisation's executive committee in the wake of the corruption scandal that rocked football's governing body.

Scala's resignation follows confirmation that Fatma Samoura of Senegal has become the first woman to hold the position of FIFA general secretary.

Her appointment was announced during the first FIFA congress led by new president Gianni Infantino, who succeeded the disgraced Sepp Blatter in February.
