FIFA sack general secretary Jerome Valcke

FIFA sacks general secretary Jerome Valcke, who is embroiled in a widespread corruption scandal within the world football governing body.

FIFA has announced that general secretary Jerome Valcke has been sacked with immediate effect.

The Frenchman was already serving a suspension from all football-related activities due to his alleged involvement in the widespread corruption scandal.

FIFA's ethics committee recommended last week that Valcke should be suspended from his job for nine years following the eight-year bans issued to outgoing president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini.

Valcke, who took office in 2007, has been accused of being involved in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets.

A statement from FIFA read: "The FIFA emergency committee decided, on January 9 2016, to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA secretary general with immediate effect. Jerome Valcke is therefore no longer the secretary general of FIFA.

"The employment relationship between Fifa and Jerome Valcke has also been terminated."

Markus Kattner will now work as acting general secretary.
