Interim FIFA president Issa Hayatou undergoes kidney transplant

Interim FIFA president Issa Hayatou undergoes a successful kidney transplant and intends to continue in his role during Sepp Blatter's suspension.

Interim FIFA president Issa Hayatou has undergone a successful kidney transplant.

The Confederation of African Football president was put in temporary charge of football's world governing body last month after Sepp Blatter was hit with a 90-day suspension.

Blatter is under investigation by the authorities over an alleged "disloyal" £1.3m payment that he made to UEFA president Michel Platini in 2011, and the 79-year-old has also been in hospital after suffering a "small emotional breakdown".

Hayatou has been running FIFA in Blatter's absence, and despite recently undergoing surgery, the 69-year-old intends to continue his role.

CAF secretary general Hicham El Amrani said: "I am pleased with the positive news given by the medical personnel. On behalf of CAF and on my own behalf, I wish our president a speedy recovery. In the coming days, I will be in regular contact with him and I am glad to know that in future, he will be back on our side."

Hayatou has been advised by doctors to rest over the next few days.
