Serious Fraud Office investigates FIFA over money laundering claims

The Serious Fraud Office begins investigations into FIFA following claims of money laundering.

FIFA is under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) after claims that there has been money laundering within football's world governing body.

The alleged money laundering is in relation to bids for both the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Speaking to the culture, media and sport select committee, SFO director David Green said that they are investigating the matter to see whether money came through London.

He said: "We are still examining issues around possible money laundering.

"I cannot confirm the assertion that money went through London - it certainly started off in Sydney and appears to have ended up in Trinidad.

"It could be money laundering, yes. Whether the money came through London is important. There are outstanding matters which touch upon money laundering. There are a number of matters we are still looking at and digging in to."

Current FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini have both been suspended while a separate investigation conducted by FIFA itself is underway.
