Darren Kelly appointed as Oldham Athletic manager

Oldham Athletic announce that they have appointed Sunderland academy coach Darren Kelly as their new manager.

Oldham Athletic have announced that Darren Kelly has been appointed as their new first team boss, with caretaker Dean Holden taking up an assistant manager role.

The League One side had been without a permanent manager after Lee Johnson left in February to take over at Barnsley.

The former York City and Carlisle United defender told the club's website: "I am delighted that the Board of Oldham Athletic Football Club have seen fit to appoint me as the club's new manager.

"It is a role that I accept with immense pride and one which I am fully focused on and committed to. As well as a wealth of playing and coaching experience, I pledge to Oldham Athletic and its supporters unwavering commitment and a desire to succeed.

"I am looking forward to building on the achievements of Oldham Athletic and driving the club to new levels of success. I ask the Oldham fans to believe in me and get behind the club wholeheartedly as we embark on an exciting new era."

Kelly, who will officially take up his role on June 1, has been working with Sunderland's academy since January.
