Late penalty denies Bundesliga new boys

A stoppage-time penalty from Mainz 05 stops SC Paderborn from collecting all three points on their Bundesliga debut.

SC Paderborn were denied all three points from their first ever Bundesliga match thanks to a late penalty from visiting Mainz 05 this afternoon.

It was visiting Mainz that started the brighter of the two sides and their pressure was rewarded in the 34th minute when they broke the deadlock.

The hosts failed to clear a loose ball inside their penalty area, which allowed Japan international Shinji Okazaki to fire in from close range.

However, their lead would only last for three minutes as Elias Kachunga found the bottom corner of the Mainz net from 20 yards out.

It appeared that the contest was going to end in a 1-1 draw, but with three minutes remaining, the newly-promoted side thought that they had claimed all three points.

Marvin Bakalorz's cross was met by Uwe Hunemeier, who headed in from 12 yards out.

The scoring was not complete, though, because, in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Mainz's Ja-Cheol Koo scored from the penalty spot to ensure that the spoils would be shared in a 2-2 draw.
