Preview: Panama vs. Jamaica - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's World Cup Qualifying - North Central America clash between Panama and Jamaica, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Panama and Jamaica will both be looking to bounce back from World Cup 2022 qualifying defeats when they do battle at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez on Sunday.

The Reggae Boyz are currently in sixth place, while Panama occupy the one and only playoff spot in CONCACAF qualifying.

Panama's hold over the playoff place became weaker on Thursday as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Costa Rica, with Bryan Ruiz grabbing the winner for the hosts.

That result leaves Los Canaleros just two points clear of Costa Rica, while they are three points adrift of the automatic qualification places.

With five games left, Panama cannot afford to dwell on Thursday's defeat, and having avoided defeat at home in the qualifying campaign, they will be grateful to return to familiar surroundings on Sunday.

In fact, the hosts will be looking to their third consecutive qualifying victory at home after beating United States and El Salvador in their previous two contests at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez.

Los Canaleros have proven to be a tough nut to crack on home soil, conceding only twice in their four home games.

Jamaica, meanwhile, saw their hopes of qualifying for a second World Cup finals take a hit on Thursday with Mexico edging out the Reggae Boyz courtesy of a 2-1 scoreline.

Despite Damion Lowe receiving a straight red card in first-half stoppage time, Jamaica took the lead, with Daniel Johnson striking to grab his first competitive international goal.

With less than 10 minutes left to play, Henry Martin restored parity before Mexico dealt the sucker punch moments later, with Alexis Vega grabbing the winner to condemn Paul Hall's side to a narrow defeat.

The loss leaves the Reggae Boyz seven points adrift of Panama in the playoff spot, and if they are to have any realistic chance of qualifying for Qatar, three points are must on Sunday.

The concern for Hall will be that his side have won just once in the current qualifying campaign, but they can take encouragement from a battling performance against Mexico despite playing the second half with 10 men.

Team News

Panama are without the services of the injured Cecilio Waterman, who will be a miss after scoring three goals in qualifying.

Christiansen introduced Alberto Quintero at half time, and the 34-year-old could come into the starting lineup for Sunday's contest.

The hosts could make a change up front with Jose Fajardo Nelson dropping to the bench, resulting in Rolando Blackburn taking up a place in the starting XI.

Meanwhile, Jamaica are without Lowe, who will miss the game through suspension.

Lowe's absence will present Liam Moore with a starting opportunity, and he will be partnered in the centre of defence by Ethan Pinnock.

Michail Antonio will have the responsibility of leading the line, and he will be aiming to add to the two goals that he has already scored in qualifying.

Panama possible starting lineup:
Mejia; Murillo, Escobar, Andrade, Davis; Quintero, Godoy, Carrasquilla, Barcenas; Blackburn, Gondola

Jamaica possible starting lineup:
Blake; Brown, Moore, Pinnock, Lawrence; Morrison, Williams, Johnson; Walker, Flemmings, Antonio

We say: Panama 3-1 Jamaica

Panama usually fare well in home fixtures, and after beating Jamaica 3-0 in the reverse fixture, we think that they will prevail to claim their third consecutive home victory in qualifying.
