Resolute Newcastle defending holds Queens Park Rangers to a 0-0 draw at Loftus Road.

Newcastle United held off a strong attacking display from Queens Park Rangers to grab a point at Loftus Road.

Joey Barton captained Rangers for the first time but they were unable to break down the Newcastle defence.

Magpies forward Leon Best had a low shot well saved by Paddy Kenny early on but it was the hosts who made much of the first-half running.

Neil Warnock's side threatened often, with the creative Adel Taarabt instrumental in much of their attacking play.

Jay Bothroyd missed from inside the six-yard box and had a header cleared off the line by Danny Simpson in the opening half hour.

New signing Shaun Wright-Phillips then also had a shot cleared off the line, this time by Steven Taylor after the winger chipped Tim Krul.

Rangers remained the more dangerous of the two sides after the break but the second-half was a much cagier affair.

The goalless draw sees Newcastle move into the Premier League's top four, while QPR rise to 11th.
