David Weir delighted with Rangers return

David Weir admits that he is excited to return to Rangers as assistant to new boss Mark Warburton.

New Rangers assistant boss David Weir has admitted that it is a dream to be back at the Scottish club.

Mark Warburton has been appointed manager at Ibrox and he will be assisted by former Gers defender Weir, with whom he worked for 18 months at previous club Brentford.

Weir, who captained Rangers during his playing days, says that it has been an emotional return for him.

"It's only three-and-a-half years since I left Rangers and I started working for Everton quite quickly after that," the 45-year-old told the Daily Record. "I probably never envisaged being back here so quickly. But if you grow up as a Rangers supporter or have been involved here that's always the dream.

"You always think you can be involved or be part of the team. It is something you hope for at some stage. I think it's just sinking in to be honest. I have only really been back here once since I left – for a game against Queen's Park not long after.

"It is probably the realisation of what's happening, to be back here and getting an opportunity to work here is special. It is quite overwhelming. I am just really looking forward to the challenge and I am excited by it."

Weir played for Rangers between 2007 and 2012.
