Reading manager Brian McDermott warns his side that they must be more ruthless to earn crucial points in the Premier League this season.

Reading manager Brian McDermott has urged his side to be more ruthless if they are serious about securing Premier League survival.

McDermott watched the Royals concede a stoppage-time winner to Wigan Athletic on Saturday, a match he wants his side to learn from quickly.

He told the club's official website: "We have to be more ruthless, In the dressing room we had a conversation and I said to the players the same thing.

"Any point away is always a decent one. We have to leave from that very quickly because this league is unforgiving. We have to see games through.

"The bottom line is that we've given a goal away with a minute to go which is crazy, just crazy and that was down to us. We have to take a draw at least, we were masters of our own downfall."

Reading slipped to second from bottom on Sunday following Southampton's victory over Newcastle United.
