Match Analysis: Getafe 0-3 Real Madrid

Sports Mole dissects the action as Real Madrid beat Getafe 3-0 in La Liga.

Real Madrid moved into second position in La Liga with a 3-0 win over Getafe on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Jese Rodriguez and Karim Benzema gave Los Blancos a 2-0 lead at the interval, before Luka Modric added a third in the second period.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of football between the two Spanish rivals.

Was the result fair?

In a word, yes. Real Madrid were not at their best this afternoon - far from it in fact - but they came up against an out-of-form and struggling Getafe outfit, who managed just one attempt on target in the entire 90 minutes. It was just about as comfortable as Los Blancos could have imagined in the Spanish capital.

Getafe's performance

The capital outfit entered the match having not picked up all three points since the end of November, but they refused to completely crumble under constant pressure from Madrid. After falling 2-0 behind, they could have easily folded and lost by five or six, but they did show character to stem the flow of pressure. That said, it is yet another defeat for Getafe, who are just four points outside of the drop zone. The fact that they managed just one attempt on target is an indication of their troubles.

Madrid's performance

Another round of La Liga football, another three points for Los Blancos, who have not been beaten in any competition since losing to Barcelona at the end of October 2013. In truth, they played much of the 90 minutes in second gear, but it was more than enough to secure all three points. Once more there were signs of defensive improvement - another clean sheet was their 11th in 13 games since the winter break - while they had no problem finding the back of the net despite the absence of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Luka Modric: Is there a better midfielder in La Liga at the moment? The Croatian continued his stunning recent form against Getafe this afternoon - capping a terrific all-round performance with his side's third in the second period. The 28-year-old was class personified each and every time he had possession of the ball.

Biggest gaffe

Gareth Bale had a wonderful chance to make it 3-0 in the latter stages of the first period following bright work from Benzema, but the Welshman could only drag his effort wide of the post from close range. It was a case of the attacker wanting to use his left foot, despite the angle favouring a right-footed attempt.

Referee performance

It was not a particular dirty match in terms of challenges, but Pedro Perez issued seven yellow cards in Madrid. Such statistics would seem to indicate that the Spaniard was too intent on using his card, but there were a number of petulant incidents. Overall, neither manager will have had too many complaints about his performance.

What next?

Getafe: Getafe will attempt to overcome their poor run of form when they travel to Celta Vigo in La Liga next weekend.

Madrid: Carlo Ancelotti's side return to the Bernabeu next weekend as they host newly-promoted Elche.
