Schalke 04 general manager Horst Heldt 'embarrassed' by Chelsea thrashing

Schalke 04 general manager Horst Heldt slams the team for their "embarrassing" 5-0 defeat at home to Chelsea in the Champions League.

Schalke 04 general manager Horst Heldt has admitted that he is embarrassed by the team's 5-0 thrashing by Chelsea in the Champions League.

The Germans were hammered at the Veltins-Arena on Tuesday night, denting their chances of reaching the last 16 of the competition.

Chelsea scored three goals in the first half before netting twice after the break to seal their place in the next round.

"We put in an embarrassing performance, never went into challenges and didn't defend ourselves. Therefore we were deservedly thrashed," Heldt told the club's official website. "You can lose against Chelsea - they are ultimately a very good team - but the way we lost is not acceptable."

Schalke need to beat Maribor away and hope that second-placed Sporting Lisbon lose at Chelsea in the final round of fixtures if they want to get out of the group.
