The Royal Blues were in control of the match right from the start and could have pulled ahead as early as the third minute when Lewis Holtby had a chance.
Eight minutes later Christian Fuchs's shot from outside the box went wide, before Joel Matip headed Jefferson Farfan's delivery just off the target.
Then in the 18th minute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulled out a good save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the Monchengladbach goal when he shot from distance.
A minute later Joel Matip came close, as did Julian Draxler when he fired from outside the visitors' penalty box.
Ter Stegen was called into action again on the half-hour mark when he kept out Holtby's attempt, and denied the Schalke midfielder again in the 42nd minute.

The home side had the first real chance of the second half when Roman Neustadter headed just wide from a corner.
However, it was Monchengladbach who broke the deadlock at the Veltins-Arena when Igor de Camargo latched on to Thorben Marx's pass and slotted home from close range in the 62nd minute.
A minute later Draxler had his shot saved for Schalke, before Alvaro Dominguez came close to doubling the visitors' advantage in the 68th minute.
Three minutes later Jermaine Jones's header was saved by Ter Stegen and then Fuchs shot wide from outside the box.
Schalke eventually restored parity five minutes from normal time when Draxler turned in Teemu Pukki's cross from close range.
