Sevilla power past Elche to go second in La Liga

Sevilla rise to second in La Liga thanks to second-half goals from Carlos Bacca and Kevin Gameiro at Elche.

Second-half goals from Carlos Bacca and Kevin Gameiro were enough for Sevilla to beat Elche and rise to second in La Liga this evening.

It was the hosts who threatened first at the Martinez Valero, but Enzo Roco couldn't find the target with his header early on.

Aleix Vidal was Sevilla's brightest player in the early stages and had a 13th-minute effort beaten away by Manu Herrera in the Elche goal.

The opening goal came just before the hour mark when Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu fired a low free kick into the area that fortunately ricocheted into the path of Bacca to bundle home from close range.

Sevilla put the game to bed 17 minutes from time when Denis Suarez raced away down the left and crossed for Gameiro to head home at the near post.

Three points puts Sevilla up to second, three points behind leaders Barcelona, because of Valencia's shock 3-0 loss at Deportivo La Coruna earlier today.

Elche, who are still without a league win at home this season, drop into the relegation zone and are just a point off the bottom.
