Huddersfield Town brush aside Sheffield Wednesday

Goals from Martin Paterson and Adam Clayton give Huddersfield Town a 2-0 victory away at Sheffield Wednesday.

A goal either side of half time gave Huddersfield Town a 2-1 victory over a struggling Sheffield Wednesday side.

Ten minutes into the game, Adam Clayton - one of six changes made by Mark Robins - played a reverse pass into the path of Martin Paterson, who took a touch out of his feet before bending a shot inside the far post to net his first goal for Huddersfield, with Sheffield Wednesday appealing loudly for an offside decision.

The home side looked to strike back immediately, but Clayton hacked down Jose Semedo as the Portuguese midfielder broke and earned a booking in the process.

Miguel Llera and James Vaughan were embroiled in a fierce battle and both players entered the book for fouls on one another as the first half drew to a close.

Vaughan should have put his side 2-0 ahead less than a minute after the restart, but the former Everton striker sliced his effort wide from eight yards out after Paterson's shot deflected kindly into his path.

Paterson himself was guilty of missing a similar chance 10 minutes later as Huddersfield continued to pass up opportunities to extend their lead.

Stephen McPhail and Michail Antonio were replaced by Jermaine Johnson and Giles Coke at the break by Dave Jones, and the Jamaican winger tested Alex Smithies with a long-range effort.

Huddersfield did double their lead in the 68th minute though, when Clayton's controlled drive evaded a number of bodies in the box and nestled in the far corner of the net.

The lively Jermaine Johnson forced Smithies into another good save from long range with little more than 10 minutes remaining and Connor Wickham halved the deficit with a low, powerful free kick from 20 yards in the 93rd minute, but Huddersfield held on to secure victory.
