Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino happy with point against Newcastle United

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino is happy with his side claiming a "positive" point in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has hailed his side for a "positive" point in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.

The Saints fell behind twice at St Mary's, but striker Manolo Gabbiadini bagged a brace to give the hosts a share of the spoils against the Magpies.

Pellegrino told BBC Sport: "The reaction was good at the end, our best 20 minutes. In defence we were good and compact. At the same time we couldn't control too much the second goal.

"We knew it would be difficult to penetrate them. You have to be balanced and move them. Maybe with two strikers we had to deliver a little bit earlier.

"The fans were behind us, pushing our team, at the end we had our best moment. We never controlled the game totally. I knew it would be difficult, but one point is a positive."

The result sees Southampton move up to 10th in the Premier League table.
