Jay Rodriguez: 'I can make World Cup squad'

Jay Rodriguez hopes that he can still persuade Roy Hodgson to take him to the World Cup next summer.

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez has insisted that he can still make Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad for the tournament in Brazil next summer.

Rodriguez said that, although he did not have the best of debuts last month, he would continue to work hard for his club in order to force his way into the reckoning.

"Obviously I wasn't happy with my performance in the game, but the experience was unbelievable for me," BBC Sport quotes him as saying.

"I took a lot of positives from that, but I would have obviously liked it to have gone better and to get the win. It would be a great feeling to go to a World Cup, but I have a lot of hard work to do. I need to keep trying to improve as a player for Southampton."

Rodriguez has played for Southampton since last summer, when he joined from Burnley.
