Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto has revealed that witnessing Fabrice Muamba's collapse on Saturday evening reminded him of Marc-Vivien Foe's death in 2003.
Bolton Wanderers midfielder Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest on the White Hart Lane pitch and is currently in a critical condition at the London Chest Hospital.
Reflecting on the incident, Cameroon international Assou-Ekotto has admitted that there were similarities to the death of his fellow countryman Foe.
"When I saw him lying on the pitch at White Hart Lane, I was scared. Scared for him, scared for his family, his friends and all those people who know him and who care about him," Assou-Ekotto wrote in his column in the London Evening Standard.
"I was also scared because he was just like me. He is young, supposedly fit — an athlete — who a few seconds ago was running up and down the same pitch as me. I had flashbacks of what had happened to my countryman, the late Marc-Vivien Foe."
An update on Muamba's condition is expected to be made later today.
