Ryan Nelsen: 'Jermain Defoe attracting Premier League interest'

Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen reveals that "top-four clubs" in England have made bids for Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.

Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen has revealed that the MLS side are not the only club interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.

Defoe looks likely to leave White Hart Lane in January, with Toronto reportedly ready to unveil the signing of the England international on Monday, but Nelsen has insisted that the Canadian outfit are not close to completing a deal for the 31-year-old.

The former Spurs defender is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "I think that if you ask any Premier League club, then they would take Jermain right now. I know Tottenham are getting offers everywhere for him, and from top-four clubs in England at the moment as well.

"I know Jermain, I know his ability, I know his character so if we could get a player like Jermain, that would be absolutely incredible, but there are a lot of things in the air. There is nothing that has been done yet. He is not our player at the moment.

"We are working really hard and all I can say is that if a quality player like Jermain Defoe graces the MLS, it will be an amazing coup for the league."

Defoe, who is a former teammate of Nelsen, has scored nine times for Spurs during the current campaign.
