Mark Hughes: 'I want Stoke City to keep hold of Jonathan Walters'

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes reiterates his desire to keep Jonathan Walters at the Britannia Stadium and calls on the Potters board to engage in further contract talks.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has expressed his desire to keep Jonathan Walters at the Britannia Stadium past the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international, who will be a free agent in the summer, has struggled to come to an agreement with the Potters over a new deal.

Hughes is quoted by the Daily Star as saying: "From a completely selfish point of view it makes complete sense to me to get something done.

"I understand the club's point of view because length of contract is important but I'm hopeful we can go back to the table and revisit this as Jon is playing really well. Hopefully Jon will want to do that as well.

"There's a danger we will lose him. He's valued here and it's not about his ability. I'd like to think we can come to some decision on it, not just for us but for Jon. He wants to be settled as well."

Walters, 32, helped his side to a victory over Chelsea in the League Cup on Tuesday by netting the opening goal.
