Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has hit back at former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore for reporting that the Black Cats boss had offered his resignation to the club.
The 41-year-old talkSPORT presenter claimed, along with other outlets, that O'Neill had decided to leave the Stadium of Light following a disappointing start to the season.
"Stan Collymore is apparently the one who has run with the thing and I'm kind of disappointed in that," O'Neill told the Sheilds Gazette. "It's given credence to something that never existed in the first place.
"I think it's lazy, but it's indicative of the time we're in, because people are looking for the headline and they want to be the first with it, regardless of what it is. I really do treat it with a pinch of salt."
The Black Cats currently sit two points adrift of the relegation zone in the league table.
