Gus Poyet "eager" for opportunity to manage Sunderland

Gus Poyet admits that he is "eager" to take on the opportunity of managing Sunderland following the dismissal of Paolo Di Canio.

Former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Gus Poyet has admitted that he is waiting on the hierarchy at Sunderland to discover if he will be named as the club's new manager.

The 45-year-old is said to have expressed interest in the position to Black Cats chairman Ellis Short after the club sacked Paolo Di Canio just five games into the Premier League season.

Poyet told Sport890 that he is "eager to have an opportunity like this", and also revealed that he spoke to Roberto Di Matteo, who said that he was not interested in moving to the Stadium of Light.

"There's a chance, I'm waiting like the player when he's first named in the first team and does not know if he will play," Poyet told the radio station. "I called [Di Matteo] and said 'are you interested?', he said 'No', I said 'that's one less!'"

Watford manager Gianfranco Zola has also been linked to the vacancy.
