Cole Stockton brace sinks Morecambe

Cole Stockton proved to be the hero for Tranmere Rovers as his brace steered the Wirral club past former League Two pacesetters Morecambe.

Two goals from Cole Stockton, including a last-minute strike, were enough to give Tranmere Rovers victory over the previously unbeaten Morecambe this afternoon.

The 20-year-old almost gave the Wirral side the lead early on when he controlled Matt Hill's header and his shot on the turn from 25 yards was just wide of Barry Roche's goal.

Tranmere did much of early running, but it was Morecambe who took the lead just before half time after a Mark Hughes header beat Owain Fon Williams.

However, Rovers were back on level terms before the hour mark as Stockton's low shot found the bottom corner of Roche's net.

Within moments of the Tranmere equaliser, the Shrimpers were down to 10 men when Hughes were sent off for an altercation with Kayode Odejayi.

Tranmere tried to find the decisive second goal, but their winner did not come until the last minute of the 90 as Hill again tormented the Morecambe defence down the right flank before his cross found Stockton in the centre of the box, and the forward netted to secure the hosts a 2-1 win.

The result means that Morecambe lose their 100% record from the start of the League Two season.
