Leon Clarke penalty seals late Bury win

Bury beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at the DW Stadium to book their place in the Capital One Cup second round.

Bury came back from a goal down to beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 at the DW Stadium in the first round of the Capital One Cup this evening.

Will Grigg and Michael Jacobs both saw early chances blocked by Bury bodies as Gary Caldwell's side began the game strongly.

Tom Soares had an effort stopped by Richard O'Donnell in the Wigan goal, before Jacobs lashed an effort narrowly over the top.

Leon Clarke then thought he had put Bury ahead in first-half injury time, only to see his strike ruled out for offside.

Wigan did take the lead shortly after the restart when Grigg converted from the penalty spot after Jacobs had been felled in the box.

Sanmi Odelusi then combined smartly with Grigg to tee up a chance for the Wigan number nine, but Grigg was flagged offside as he prepared to pull the trigger.

Bury were level with their first chance of the second half as Clarke headed home just after the hour mark, and then struck in the final minute to seal the win.

The goal came when Nick Pope was awarded a penalty after he went down in the Wigan area, with Clarke stroking the spot kick into the bottom corner to send David Flitcroft's side into the next round.
