McCarthy: Wolves survival chances "unlikely"

Mick McCarthy says it's "unlikely" Wolves will win the three games necessary for survival.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has said it "unlikely" his club will win the three games necessary for survival.

The Midlands team have six games remaining in the season, with three - Fulham, Stoke and Birmingham - in quick succession from Saturday.

McCarthy believes three wins from the six will be enough to avoid relegation, but with a tight bottom of table it could be fewer. West Ham's Avram Grant is also seeking three wins, but from just five games.

"That would be remarkable because he’s talking about a 60 per cent win success rate. If we get three wins out of six, we’ll stay up," McCarthy told the Express & Star. “But will we get those three wins? Looking at what’s happened this season, it’s unlikely.

“It can be done. But I’m a realist – I look at the other teams and think they’ve got five games left so let’s say they get a point a game, then 38 might be enough to stay up. We can all speculate, but no one has a clue how many it will take. My view is just to try to beat Fulham.”

Wolves host Fulham at Molineux on Saturday, with kickoff at 15.00.
