Andy Murray secures a place in the second round of the Japan Open after a difficult test against Marcus Baghdatis

British number one Andy Murray has claimed a place in the second round of the Japan Open after a tough three-set contest with Marcos Baghdatis.

The Scot, who won the Thailand Open last week, managed to come through a difficult match with a 7-6[4] 2-6 6-4 victory.

Murray's Cypriot opponent put pressure on the world number four in the opening set by forcing the final match to a tie break.

The 24-year-old stumbled at the beginning of the second set after dropping two service games and was forced into a third set.

Despite Baghdatis's form, Murray was able to secure the winner and cement himself into the next round in Tokyo.
